Do-It-Yourself termite treatment: Summary of presentation by Christ Milesis on March 25, 2009.
Homeowners can perform simple, effective spot treatment to control termite activity. This is presented as an alternative to tenting/fumigation, which is costly, inconvenient, hazardous, potentially damaging to roof materials, and has no long-lasting benefit.
Here are the materials needed for Do-It-Yourself termite treatment:
1. Cordless drill
2. 1/8" drill bit
3. Premise Foam (available on Ebay)
4. Flashlight
5. Safety glasses
6. Ladder (if necessary)
7. Rag
The technique is as follows:
1. Identify termite outbreak by observation of 4"-10" circle of tiny brown pellet droppings on floor or other horizontal surface.
2. Use flashlight to find outlet hole in wood, directly above pellet droppings.
3. Drill 1/8" hole directly in outlet hole, at a depth of approximately 1.5".
4. Insert tip of Premise Foam into drilled hole, compress button to release Foam, and hold button down for 2-4 seconds. You will hear an audible "whoosh" or "hiss" sound, indicating the foam is expanding through the hollow galleys of the termites. Do not remove the tip. Keep it wedged in the hole for at least 2-3 minutes, until the hissing sounds stops.
6. Remove tip slowly. Use rag to wipe away any excess foam from visible wood.
7. Vacuum any existing pellet droppings from floor, then place a sheet of white paper in same exact location. The absence of droppings on the paper over the next several days will indicate termites have been killed. (note: some residual pellet droppings may occur, due to gravity and building vibration, etc., but that is normal. Unless you see significant droppings on the white paper, your treatment was successful).
